A word from our surgeon; Tristan de Chalain; explaining the surgical procedure and reasons why women decide to go ahead with labiaplasty:

Labiaplasty is becoming one of the most widely sought after aesthetic procedures in plastic surgery and has become a worldwide trend. It is a surgical procedure designed to reduce overly large and protuberant labia minora, or the inner lips of the vagina. Women may simply do not like the appearance of the fleshy bits, or they may find that they are uncomfortable in tight or revealing clothing, or when seated on a bicycle saddle.

For most, it is a combination of appearance and discomfort that drives them to seek an intervention. Formerly, this was something simply not spoken about, but with the rise of the internet and a more frank and open approach to such matters, women in all walks of life are becoming aware of how readily available such procedures are. Moreover, as more and more patients come forward for the surgery, the word is getting out about just how quick and easy it is.

Surgical labiaplasty is sought by women who, either congenitally, or after childbirth, note that the inner lips of the vagina, the labia minora, are, or have become, excessively large. These protrude and may be unsightly, or become uncomfortable in clothing or when exercising. The surgery is fairly simple, although possible to do under Local Anaesthetic, many patients prefer a day stay General Anaesthetic procedure.

The labia are spread out and depending on the extent and exact nature of the problem, triangular segments of the central portion of the labia may be marked for excision and removed. The tissues are sewn together with dissolving sutures. Because of the excellent blood supply, healing is usually prompt and problem free, but sexual penetration should be avoided for a month to six weeks to allow time for the swelling and tenderness to settle and let the tissues strengthen. Complications, apart from early and transient swelling, bruising and tenderness, are rare.
